Keb Classic our own way!

It's tuesday afternoon and I get hold of Sara by phone. We been talking about enter Keb Classic, a ski mountaineering race up at Kebnekaise mountain station above the Arctic circle. A two day race with over 18,800 vertical feet (5700 meters) gain. So three days before the start we made a final decision to enter and race, but to do it our own way because we have different levels of fitness but both of us love to be in the mountains. We book our tickets to Kiruna and Nikkaloukta and yesterday, three days later we arrived and we have just finished up our first day. I have never been up here before in Kebnekaise massif. So I'm here to see the area, learn more and have plenty of fun with Sara. Saras main goal, make it to the summit of the South Peak, the highest peak in Sweden with 2104 meter (6300 feet) and of course I want to make the summit too. I guess all of us that is here want's it.

This morning when we woke up there was big winds and "milky" out side. Witch mean bad visibility. The start was delayed 2 hours and the course had a new stretch. A two loop course with less vertical gain and shorter distance doe to the weather.

We hope we reach the summit and get to do all fun parts of the course tomorrow that we missed today. Let's hope the weather Gods are with us and we will have another awesome day in the Swedish mountains.

Stockholm and Sandhamn!

I had a great Easter weekend with my Mum and friends in Stockholm and on Sandhamn. Great healthy food combined with the awesome company and some training, we got two sunny days here in Stockholm. For now, it's poring down outside, so cozy to hear the rain hitting the window. It's a long time ago since I heard that sound, the sound of Swedish summer and fall. Today I got back from 24 hours on Sandhamn with Per and Anders. A lot of hang- and relax time where spent but also great meals and we got to do the second best trail run in the world (by my mean), it's located here on this island! So I took Per for a run.

Before dinner we had some quality time in the tub by the sea. 2.8 degrees in the sea right now all ÖtillÖ (Island to Island) swimmers... Not the tub though, hot and nice. Me and Per took our bikes and raced down to Trouville and meet up with more friends for an culinary Italian dinner.

More training got done today when I got back home to my mum's place after setting up her new computer. I feelt strong for what's coming up. Me together with Sara just signed on to a race on friday and saturday, Keb Classic! Flight ticket's are booked and on thursday I'm heading up. Two days of racing with a total vertical feet gain of approximately 18.000 feet (5800 meter). First day we climb the highest summit in Sweden, Kebnekaise and basically are doing loops around it after that. I will get back to you when I know more about the race to be honest, but it will be so much fun! =)

Per is chill'n in the sun with a coffee!

Back in Sweden. Happy Easter!

Back in Sweden. 17.20 (5.20 pm) I landed in Stockholm and Arlanda today. I don't know how I did it, but with three overweight bags and no extra frees (YES) I got home to a gray like Stockholm. But at the airport my mum picked me up and we shared some stories from last months away from each other in the car back to her apartment. She just got back from Prag and I'm from Telluride. I will spend Easter i Stockholm and then we'll see where I go to continue skiing this season. Åre, Gränsen, The Alps, Norway, Kebnekaise, who knows but something will happend and more fun is to come.

Tomorrow I won't give Himay or Ricky a call unfortunately in the morning, but might instead take my bike for a ride. Let's hope for great Easter weather for the weekend and Happy Easter to all of you!

Bye Bye Telluride!

Last sunny day in Telluride and Babsi and me, the two "skibums" decided to go for a hike and not for a ski... Believe it or not... We hiked up one of the most historical roads in the area, Tom Boy road. Many years ago people walked up this road for work in the mine up in Tom Boy basin. The gold rush stopped 1970 and since then skiing and tourism have been the main income for this town. Our beloved Telluride! There is so much, but short history around here and I could talk about it for hours...

All my bags are packed and overweight... We'll see how that goes tomorrow at the airport, hoping to meet a kind person at the counter who I can't trick somehow...

Thanks all good friends here in Telluride for a great winter and I see you soon again. Now I look forward for all adventure that I have a head of me. My schedule are crazy from now on but I will enjoy every singel moment of it. Nothing is written in stone yet for the near future but I can just ensure it's plans looks fun and exiting right now.

One section of Tom Boy road.

A quick relax before starting heading back down.

Bridal Vail ice falls and once a power station for Telluride. The first town with electric street light in the world.

The Grand Traverse - Check!

It's 22.00 and we're leaving a friends house down town Crested Butte that we borrowed for a nap and prepare us and our back packs for the 23.00 (11 pm) start. This is the 15th anual Elk mountain traverse, even called The Grand Travers from Crested Butte till Aspen, Colorado. Walking out we hit the bus perfectly, it's packed, not with racers but with dressed up seasonal worker. They are having their anual end of season party next to our start line up in mountain village we get to know. Usually the start is down by the high school but because of lack of snow this year and private property owners not allowing us on their property the first stage of the course this year was redirected and new to everyone. Which meant, a fast little skin up through the ski area, than down to a river that we had to cross on a 12 inches (30cm) wide bridge, super slick when melting water started to freeze on top of it. One team feel in and had to stop the race right there, such a bummer and really unfortunately. All together we were 130 teams (260 people) that took of yesterday night. An incredible snake/line from everyones headlamps formed up along the hillside on the other side of the bridge. An magnificent view when looking back. This hillside we hit is south facing, that means NO snow and boot packing, skis on your back pack and your walking/running in your skiboots on small cow trails for 5-7 miles (8-11.2 km). Super fun running and we did really well this part of the race, once done with this part, my boots where full of branches and mud from all small bushes and wet trails. And there was no time to stop and fix it. Still with our skis on the back we continued up a dirt road that turned in to a singel track, we finally decided to put on our skis again after leaving the artificial snow at the ski resort. We had to skin over mud and rocks where the snow didn't fill in but committed to it. That way we were fast and made lot's of progression up through the start field. That together with our great start on the hike/run made us have more headlamps behind us than infront of us, that was the only thing we knew.
The skinning we just began was going the be a killer for me, it was just soo long and it never ended. I got into a bad mood just because I was living in unawareness of what was coming up. Himay in the other hand, who done the race one year ago and talked me into doing it with him this year knew better and just told me it's long. Finally after a few hours we reached the pass, I was so happy to set my ski boot in skimode instead of walk mode. Such a relief to get to ski, it took us almost 4,5 hours into the race before we got to ski our first real downhill out in the remote wilderness in between Crested Butte and Aspen.

After that I felt good again and I took the lead again setting a good fast pace for us. Skipping all aid stations and not listening to recommendations about taking of skis or to keep them on made us progress fast and efficiently through the course. When the sun rise we already past Taylor pass, more than halfway. From here it's just an on going long ridge that last all the way to the finish line. To accomplish this fast we used Himay's knowledge of the course and where switching positions with a couple of other team back and forth. We stopped at the mandatory 10 min aid station 7 mils (11,2 km) from the finish line. Here we got to now that we where in the topp 30 position. Our strategy was, -7 miles is nothing, let's go for it! Let's go fast and see how many positions we could take. From here we stopped using skinns and where just booting all small hills. Skating on the hard and firm crust next to the snowmobile tracks made it easy for us the gain one after another position.

We topped out on top of Ajax, (Aspen mountain) just before 9.00 am a clock and had a fantastic cruiser corduroy run in perfect spring conditions all the way down the the finish line/area at the base of the Gondola. We finished 18th, our time: 10,03 hours we are really happy with. To compere it we can use Himay's last years time. We shaved it of from last year with 4 h 59 minutes, Pretty damn good! We both feel that we have more to give, both when comes to energy levels and lighter gear as skis and what we have in our packs, so maybe next year, how about top 10. ? .  =)

Now I haven't sleept in more than 36 hours and are sitting next to my bed writing to you all, aspire after to cuddle up under my comforter. Once again a big Thanks to my/our locally sponsors, Jagged Edge and Erik and Wagner Custom (that I forgot to mention last time, but they are really important to me, Thanx Pete) and of course Peak Performance and PocSports!

Worth mention might be that this years conditions where faster then ever, not easier but faster. There was a new course record in 7 hours & 32 minutes, a team from Crested Butte. Congrats!

The Grand Traverse!

One hour before start! we get our becons checked.

At the start line! A lot of people.

Himay makes last preparations, 5,4,3,2,1 - GO!

And of we went, first 100 meter (300 feet) like a sprint race  and than it calms down.

Headlamps are a key in this race when we race through the night.

God Morning! You can almost see Taylor pass behind Himay, it's real position is to the right of this picture.

Great morning light!

Getting closer for each step/stride.

More downhill to come!

Me in the morning, tired but happy!

And god morning friends, finally I can see you without a headlamp!

That goes for you people on the tail too!

9,03 am this morning we crossed the finish line on a time on 10 hours & 3 minutes!

Overall 18th, in our category 9 and our time 10.03 hours!

The Grand Traverse!

Okey people! We now have less than 2,5 hours to start here in Crested Butte. I just had a power nap and are now tejping up my toes and nipples. In a race like this your body goes through a lot of stress. If you can minimize that leval of stress before hand that helps a lot. Hopefully we will have no problems along our way. Because of the poor snow situation this ha e now turned in to an adventure race were we have to boot pack for 7 miles and cross over bigger streems/rivers. Our primary goal is to finish and secondary with a good time around 12-14 hours. I have never done this particular race before but Himay has. We start of under a star clear sky with headlamps and will finish in sun shine and bluebird. That's the forecast with light winds. See you all again when we finished in about 14-16 hours! :-)

Telluirde to Valley X!

This morning when the phone rang it was nothing else than relaxed voice in the other end. It's the day before our race from Crested Butte to Aspen (The Grand Traverse) and we wanted to do something easy. We meet up at chair 4 around 10.00 am and headed out, still not 100 % sure of what we were going to do. In the lift we were talking about the race and what gear we needed to get after we were done skiing. Also about when to leave in the morning to get there in time for gear check in and race meeting. After a short boot pack we stod on the top of the ridge looking down on our run and Valley X. That's what we ended up skiing. It offered great spring corn snow all the way down with some grass skiing in the end.

We changed tyre on our ride (car) that we will be using for tomorrow and headed back to Telluride and Jagged Edge! Erik, the owner of the best mountaineer and outdoor store in Telluirde, Jagged Edge had offered to sponsor us with the gear we needed for the race. A BIG Thanks for setting us up with everything we needed to Jagged Edge and Erik. Because there is a load of things you need as mandatory gear for this race. We are racing through the night between friday and saturday and finish hopefully 12-14 hours later. The race start tomorrow at 23.00 (11.00 pm) and we are now all set and super exited to race. Also a Thanks to Peak Performance and POC Sports for supporting me all winter and year around.

I have prepared way better for this race and feel strong. So does Himay and he's been going big everyday since last race in Aspen we did together. So we expect to have a great time and lot's of fun! Our main goal is to finish and secondary within a good time!
